Meera Varghese is a dancer, choreographer and teacher of the South Indian classical dance form Bharatanatyam. She trained under Sri Kalaimamani Ramalingam in Karaikal, India, and has attended masterclasses with Smt. Bragha Bessell and Smt. Priyadarshini Govind as well as private training with Sri Jai Govinda. Born and raised in Canada, Meera Varghese has performed as a Bharatanatyam soloist in countless dance productions and festivals in India, Canada, Belgium, Austria, Germany and Switzerland including the Mangani Tirunal Festival (Karaikal, India), the Expanse New Works Dance Festival (Edmonton, Canada) and the 2001 Canada Games (London, Canada). At the Kalanidhi International Dance Festival (Toronto, Canada) she performed the role of Vishnu in the Kuchipudi dance ballet “Mohini Bhasmasura”. Meera Varghese is also a trained opera singer and completed her Master of Music in Opera Performance at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln (Cologne, Germany). She has sung in numerous opera productions at Theater Aachen, Theater Münster, Bayer Kultur and Kammeroper Köln in roles such as Susanna in “Le nozze di Figaro”, Annina in “Eine Nacht in Venedig”, Gretel in “Hänsel und Gretel”, and Serpina in “La serva padrona”. She was the choreographer and solo performer of the children’s dance theatre production “The Monkey and the Indian Princess” at Horizont Theater Köln. At Theater Hagen she choreographed and performed the role of Aouda in the 2019 production of “Around the World in 80 Days”. In the 2019/20 season she is appearing in the Schlosstheater Neuwied production of “Aladin and the Magic Lamp” in the role of the Princess.
